CHIA SEEDS

Tiny seeds with a rich history, from beverages to baked goods, these tiny black and white seeds from the Salvia hispanica plant have a long history. Grown in Mexico and South America, chia seeds are said to have been used by Mayan and Aztec cultures for supernatural powers.

Medicinal Benefits

Chia seeds deliver a massive amount of nutrients with very few calories. Chia seeds only contain 101 calories per ounce. Another area in which chia seeds shine is their high antioxidant content. These antioxidants fight the production of free radicals, which can damage cell molecules and contribute to aging and diseases like cancer. Chia seeds are high in quality protein, much higher than most plant foods. Protein is the most weight loss friendly macronutrient and can drastically reduce appetite and cravings. Chia seeds may lower the rise in blood sugar after a high crab meal, possibly benefitting people with type 2 diabetes.

Commercial use

Chia can survive drought as the plant grows in very less water areas. It needs water in the beginning stages of its growth for few days, continuously and then may be once in a week. Cultivating chia is only one of the many experiments to make agriculture, food secure and drought-proof.
