Citronella

Citronella grass plant is native to tropical areas of Asia. It is grown commercially in Indonesia, Java, Burma, India and Sri Lanka. Citronella is introduced recently in India and is mainly cultivated in the lower hills of Assam, Karnataka and southern parts of Gujarat covering about 2000 hectares of land.

Medicinal Benefits

Citronella oil is a type of essential oil long used in aroma therapy. Sourced from certain species of plants in the cymbopogon genus, citronella oil is most commonly used as a natural insect repellent. When used in aroma therapy, citronella essential oil is said to help treat cold, fever and headache. In addition, citronella essential oil is said to protect against insect bites, reduce pain and boost energy.

Commercial use

Citronella oil is popularly used as an insect repellent. Environmental Protection Agency classifies it as a bio pesticide with a non-toxic mode of action. Citronella oil can be found in dozens of registered pesticide products, such as sprays, lotions and candles. The oil is used extensively as a source of perfumery chemicals. These chemicals find extensive use in soap, candles and incense, perfumery, cosmetics and flavouring industries throughout the world.
